The wait is finally over for one of the Yankees' most anticipated young bats. George Lombard Jr., the 21-year-old infielder who has been making a mockery of Triple-A pitching over the last month, is set to join the big league club on Tuesday. The move comes as the team looks to inject some life into a lineup that has struggled to find consistency in the middle infield.
Lombard Jr. has been on a tear since his promotion to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, slashing well over .300 with a slugging percentage that has scouts buzzing. His approach at the plate has matured noticeably, with a much better eye for breaking balls and a willingness to use the whole field. While he has shown flashes of power, it is his contact rate and plus speed that have really turned heads. He has also swiped double-digit bases in the minors this year, adding a dynamic element the Yankees have lacked.
The plan is for Lombard Jr. to get regular starts at second base, though he can also handle shortstop if needed. Manager Aaron Boone has hinted that the kid will hit near the top of the order, likely in the two-hole, to take advantage of his on-base skills. It is a bold move for a team in the thick of a playoff race, but the front office clearly believes his energy and bat are worth the risk. Fans have been clamoring for this call-up for weeks, and now they will finally get to see what the future looks like in pinstripes.
