The Arizona Diamondbacks fell to the Miami Marlins 10-6 on Tuesday night, dropping the series opener in a game where the pitching staff could not hold onto any momentum. Every time the Dbacks offense managed to scratch across a run, the pitching promptly gave it back. The hitters would battle back to tie the game or take the lead, only to watch the Marlins immediately answer with another crooked number on the scoreboard.
Starter Ryne Nelson lasted just four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out three. The bullpen did not fare much better, as the Marlins continued to tack on runs against relievers Joe Mantiply, Kevin Ginkel, and Justin Martinez. Miami collected 14 hits on the night, consistently putting pressure on Arizona's defense.
The Dbacks offense showed some life, scoring in four different innings, but they could never string together enough to overcome the constant deficits. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in two runs, and Ketel Marte added a solo home run in the sixth inning. However, the damage was already done as the Marlins built a comfortable lead.
Arizona will look to even the series on Wednesday before heading to Washington for a weekend set against the Nationals.
