Grizzlies Weigh Cost of Cutting Walter Clayton Jr.

Grizzlies Weigh Cost of Cutting Walter Clayton Jr.

Walter Clayton Jr. could be one of the Memphis Grizzlies' final roster cuts, but moving on from the second-year guard could prove costly.

The Grizzlies are deep in the backcourt, and roster spots are limited. That math puts Clayton on the bubble as the team trims its lineup before the season begins. On paper, he is a candidate to be waived. In practice, the decision is not that simple.

Clayton brings value that does not always show up in a box score. He defends with energy, pushes the pace, and gives coaches a reliable option when starters need rest. Those traits matter over an 82-game season, especially for a team that leans on its guards to create pressure on both ends.

There is also the matter of development. Young players often need time to adjust to the speed and physicality of the professional game. Cutting a second-year guard before he has had a real chance to settle in can look short-sighted later. If Clayton finds his footing elsewhere, the Grizzlies could end up watching a player they drafted and trained succeed in another uniform.

The front office has to balance immediate needs against long-term upside. Keeping Clayton means using a roster spot on a player who may not crack the rotation right away. Letting him go means risking that he becomes a useful contributor for someone else.

Memphis has built its identity on depth, defense, and internal growth. Clayton fits that mold. The question is whether the team still has room for him, or whether the numbers will force a tough call. Either way, the decision carries risk, and the Grizzlies will feel the consequences well beyond the final cut.
