Syracuse University Athletic Director John Wildhack will retire this summer, concluding a ten-year tenure at the helm of the Orange athletics program. The university confirmed the departure, which will become effective on August 2nd.
Wildhack, a Syracuse alumnus and former ESPN executive, took over the athletic department in 2016. His decade of leadership oversaw significant transitions, most notably the school's move from the Big East Conference to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), a shift that redefined Syracuse's athletic landscape and rivalries.
During his time, Wildhack presided over numerous facility upgrades and coaching hires across Syracuse's 20 varsity sports. He also navigated the complex challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted collegiate athletics nationwide. University Chancellor Kent Syverud acknowledged Wildhack's steady leadership and his deep commitment to the student-athlete experience, both academically and competitively.
A national search for Wildhack's successor will begin immediately. The incoming athletic director will inherit a program firmly established within the ACC and facing the evolving future of collegiate sports. Wildhack's retirement marks the end of a significant chapter for Syracuse athletics, one defined by conference realignment and institutional growth.
