A full slate of recreation programs and high school and college competitions is set for the next ten days across the region.
On Friday, June 19, the city parks department opens registration for its summer youth soccer league. The program is open to children ages 6 through 14. Practices will begin the first week of July, with games running through mid-August. Registration closes on June 26.
The annual Lakeview 5K Fun Run is scheduled for Saturday, June 20. The race starts at 8 a.m. at the Lakeview Community Center. Walk-ups are welcome, but pre-registration is encouraged to guarantee a race shirt. Proceeds benefit the local high school track and field program.
In college sports, the state university baseball team hosts a three-game series against a conference rival starting Friday evening. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. at University Field. The series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon. Sunday's game time is still to be determined based on travel schedules.
On the prep scene, the district tennis championships begin Monday, June 22, at the Central High School courts. Matches start at 9 a.m. each day and run through Wednesday. The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to the regional tournament in July.
Also on Monday, the summer swim league opens its season with a meet at the Northside Aquatic Center. Events begin at 5:30 p.m. Teams from six area neighborhoods will compete.
For those looking to stay active indoors, the community center offers adult volleyball on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. No registration is required, and players can drop in for a small fee.
Finally, the youth fishing clinic at Riverside Park takes place on Saturday, June 27. The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes instruction on casting, knot tying, and local fish species. Poles and bait are provided. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
