Everton's five-match winning run at Goodison Park has come to an end with Aston Villa running out 3-2 winners on Merseyside this afternoon. Brian Sorensen enjoyed a successful return to his former club as his Villa side claimed all three points in a tightly contested encounter.
The visitors took the lead early through a well worked move that caught the Everton defence off guard. The home side responded well and equalised before the break, but Villa restored their advantage shortly after the interval. Everton pushed forward in search of another equaliser and got one, only for Villa to strike the decisive blow late on.
The result ends a strong run of form for Everton at home, which had seen them climb the table and build momentum in recent weeks. Sorensen, who previously managed the Toffees, was clearly pleased with his team's performance against his old employers.
Everton will need to regroup quickly as they look to return to winning ways in their next fixture. The defeat leaves them with work to do in the coming weeks, while Villa will take confidence from a hard fought away victory against a side that had been in excellent form on their own patch.
