Audacy has announced a major programming shift for its Los Angeles radio market, confirming that the news simulcast currently airing on 97.1 FM will be replaced by a new sports talk station. The change, set to take effect on May 11, will end the long-standing simulcast of KNX News on the FM frequency, which has been paired with the station’s AM signal at 1070.
Starting in May, 97.1 FM will become home to “The Fan,” a dedicated sports talk format designed to compete in the competitive Los Angeles sports radio landscape. The move signals Audacy’s strategic pivot toward live sports content, which has proven to be a reliable draw for both listeners and advertisers. The new station will feature local hosts, game analysis, and coverage of major Southern California teams, including the Lakers, Dodgers, Rams, and Kings.
KNX News will continue to operate on its original AM frequency at 1070, as well as through its digital streaming platforms. Audacy executives emphasized that the news brand remains a priority, but that the FM frequency offers a better opportunity to capture a younger, sports-oriented audience. The company has not announced specific on-air talent for The Fan, but industry insiders expect a mix of familiar local voices and new hires.
The transition reflects broader trends in radio, where AM stations have seen declining listenership while FM and digital platforms grow. Audacy’s decision to shift resources toward sports talk follows similar moves by other major market operators seeking to capitalize on the popularity of live sports programming.
