The Atlanta Braves are on the hunt for pitching help ahead of the trade deadline, and one name stands above the rest: Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal. While the market is full of rental arms and mid-rotation options, Skubal offers something the Braves desperately need: a frontline starter with multiple years of control.
Skubal has been dominant since returning from flexor tendon surgery in 2023. This season, he has posted a 2.50 ERA with a strikeout rate that ranks among the league's best. His fastball sits in the mid-90s, and his changeup has become one of the most effective pitches in baseball. For a Braves rotation that has dealt with injuries to Spencer Strider and inconsistent performances from the back end, Skubal would slot in behind Max Fried as a legitimate number two, if not a co-ace.
The challenge, of course, is the asking price. Detroit is not desperate to trade Skubal, and they will demand a haul of top prospects. Atlanta's farm system is thin after years of graduating talent to the big league club, but they still have pieces like Hurston Waldrep and AJ Smith-Shawver. The Tigers will want at least one of them, plus more.
Still, if the Braves want to make a serious run at another World Series, Skubal is the kind of player worth emptying the cupboard for. He is not a rental. He is not a gamble. He is a proven, young ace who could anchor the rotation for years. For Atlanta, there is no better trade target.
