Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback coach Tom Arth had high praise for rookie signal-caller Will Howard following the team's recent organized team activities. Howard, who has yet to take a snap in an NFL preseason game, continues to turn heads with his poise and command of the offense.
Arth noted that Howard's preparation and work ethic have stood out since he joined the team. "He's picking up the system quickly and showing a lot of maturity for a young player," Arth said. "His footwork in the pocket and his ability to read defenses have been really encouraging to see this early."
Howard, a former standout at Kansas State, was selected by the Steelers in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. While he is currently behind veteran starter Kenny Pickett and backup Mitch Trubisky on the depth chart, his performance in OTAs has sparked conversation about his potential to compete for a roster spot.
The coaching staff has been particularly impressed with Howard's accuracy on intermediate throws and his willingness to learn from the veterans in the room. Arth emphasized that the rookie is not just going through the motions but is actively seeking feedback after every drill.
With training camp still weeks away, Howard's strong showing in OTAs has given the Steelers' coaching staff reason to believe they may have found a developmental gem. If he continues on this trajectory, he could push for the backup role and make the final 53-man roster a more difficult decision for the front office.
