A full slate of local activities and athletic events is set for the next week and a half, running from August 14 through August 23.
The city parks department will host its final summer youth swim meet on Saturday morning at the municipal pool. Registration opens at 8 a.m. and the first heat starts at 9. A family fun run is scheduled for Sunday along the river trail, with distances of one mile and 5K. Same-day signup is available starting at 7:30 a.m. near the boathouse.
For college fans, the community college volleyball team opens its home season Friday night at 6 p.m. against a regional rival. The men's soccer squad follows with a scrimmage on Tuesday evening. Both games are free for students with a valid ID.
On the prep side, several high school football teams begin fall practice this week. Most schools will hold light drills in the afternoons, with the first full-contact sessions starting next Monday. Coaches ask that spectators stay off the field during practice hours.
The tennis courts at the north end of the park will close for resurfacing starting August 18. They are expected to reopen by the end of the month. Players should use the south courts in the meantime.
A pickleball clinic for beginners is set for August 22 at the community center gym. Two sessions are offered, one at 10 a.m. and another at 1 p.m. Paddles and balls are provided. Space is limited to 24 people per session, so advance signup is recommended at the front desk.
Finally, the adult co-ed softball league will wrap up its regular season with doubleheaders on August 23 at the west fields. The championship game is scheduled for the following Saturday, weather permitting.
