Sports Column: Fletcher Mackel explains how & why professional hockey in New Orleans could succeed

A new idea is circulating in New Orleans sports circles: bringing the Professional Women's Hockey League to the city. The proposal hinges on the renovated Municipal Auditorium serving as the team's primary home. While hockey in the Deep South might raise eyebrows, the concept has more merit than one might expect.

The key is the venue. Municipal Auditorium, once a bustling hub for events and a historic site for Carnival balls, is undergoing a major renovation. If the city can deliver a modern, intimate arena with good sightlines and ice-making capabilities, it solves the biggest hurdle for any expansion team. A smaller, dedicated facility creates a better atmosphere than a cavernous, half-empty NBA arena.

The PWHL itself is a growing product. The league has shown strong attendance and engaged fanbases in its first season, proving there is a market for high-level women's hockey. New Orleans has a track record of supporting unique sports properties. The city embraced the VooDoo of the Arena Football League and has a loyal following for the Pelicans. A women's hockey team could tap into a different demographic, offering a fast, physical, and affordable live sports option.

The real challenge is cultural. Hockey is not a native sport to Louisiana. However, the city's strong youth hockey programs, the presence of the University of Louisiana hockey club, and a growing number of transplants from hockey markets provide a foundation. If the team markets itself as a New Orleans institution, embracing the local music, food, and culture, it could carve out a niche. The success of the Vegas Golden Knights and the Seattle Kraken shows that hockey can thrive in nontraditional markets when the presentation is right. For New Orleans, the timing and the venue might finally be aligning.
