The Dallas Cowboys are running their usual offseason playbook. They let key free agents walk. They made a few modest signings on the second and third waves of the market. They sat out the big-money trades. For fans who have watched this team for the last decade, the script feels familiar. The front office preaches fiscal discipline, talks about drafting and developing, and waits for the compensatory picks to roll in. That part has not changed.
But there is one giant exception this year, and it is not on the roster. It is in the coaching booth. Mike McCarthy is entering the final year of his contract. That is a new variable for this franchise. In previous years, the Cowboys either extended their head coach early or let him play out the deal with a clear sense of job security. This time, McCarthy is a lame duck. The team did not give him an extension after a 12-win season. They let him coach through the final year of his deal without any public commitment beyond 2024.
That changes the dynamic entirely. Every decision McCarthy makes this summer and fall carries extra weight. Every loss will be dissected as a sign that he has lost the locker room. Every win will be framed as a job interview for his next contract, either in Dallas or somewhere else. The players know it. The front office knows it. The fans certainly know it.
So while the roster moves look the same as always, the pressure on the head coach is completely different. That is the one thing that separates this offseason from all the others.
