Raiders top newcomers ranked by immediate impact

The Las Vegas Raiders brought in a wave of veteran talent this offseason, and not all additions are created equal when it comes to hitting the ground running. While some signings are long-term projects or depth pieces, others are expected to step into starting roles and produce from Week 1. Here is a look at the Raiders top newcomers ranked by how much they will contribute right away.

Topping the list is defensive tackle Christian Wilkins. The former Miami Dolphin signed a massive contract to anchor the interior of the Raiders defensive line. His ability to collapse the pocket and stop the run fills a glaring need, and he should immediately draw double teams, freeing up edge rushers Maxx Crosby and Malcolm Koonce. Wilkins is a game-wrecker from snap one.

Right behind him is offensive guard Cody Whitehair. With the Raiders offensive line in flux, Whitehair brings stability and experience. He can play both guard and center, but his primary role will be to shore up the interior and protect quarterback Gardner Minshew or Aidan O'Connell. His veteran savvy should help the run game find consistency.

Cornerback Jack Jones, claimed off waivers late last season, looks like a different player in a Raiders uniform. He flashed playmaking ability in limited action and is expected to start opposite Jakorian Bennett. If his off-field focus holds, Jones could be a steal and a major upgrade in the secondary.

Wide receiver Michael Gallup is a wild card. He struggled in Dallas after an ACL tear, but the Raiders are betting on a rebound. He will not be the top target, but if he can regain his deep-threat form, he adds a dimension the offense lacked.

Running back Alexander Mattison provides a reliable backup to Zamir White. He is not flashy, but he is a solid pass-blocker and can handle a heavy workload if needed. That reliability matters in a division with tough defenses.

Rounding out the list are linebacker Ernest Jones, who adds speed to the second level, and tight end Harrison Bryant, who will be a blocking specialist. Both will see snaps but are not expected to be stars.

The Raiders have a mix of proven veterans and reclamation projects. If the top names deliver, this team could surprise. If not, it will be a long year in Las Vegas.
