Patriots 1st Pro Bowler Ever Dies at 84

The New England Patriots are mourning the loss of one of the franchise's earliest stars. Patriots Hall of Fame center Jon Morris has died at 84, the organization announced Thursday.

Morris spent 11 seasons with the Boston and New England Patriots from 1964 through 1974, establishing himself as one of the premier offensive linemen of his era. He was the first player in team history to be selected to the Pro Bowl, earning that honor during the 1967 season. That recognition came after he helped anchor an offensive line that protected quarterback Babe Parilli and opened running lanes for fullback Jim Nance, who led the league in rushing that year.

A product of Holy Cross, Morris was drafted by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 1964 AFL draft. He quickly became a fixture on the offensive line, known for his durability, intelligence, and technical skill. He started 129 games for the franchise and was named an AFL All-Star in 1967 as well. After his time in New England, he played one season with the Detroit Lions before retiring.

Morris was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2011. Teammates and coaches remembered him as a quiet leader who set the standard for professionalism during the team's early years. The organization released a statement calling him a foundational figure in Patriots history. He is survived by his family and a legacy that helped shape the team's identity in its formative decades.
