NBA Europe Project Moves Forward After EuroLeague Merger Vote Fails

October 7, 2026 - 23:00

The NBA is pushing ahead with plans to launch a new basketball competition in Europe. This decision comes after a critical vote on a proposed merger with the EuroLeague did not pass. The EuroLeague's shareholders rejected the idea, leaving the NBA to pursue its own path for the continent.

The proposed NBA Europe league would represent a major shift in the professional basketball landscape overseas. For years, the EuroLeague has stood as the premier club competition in Europe. The NBA has long viewed Europe as a key growth market, with a deep pool of talent and passionate fan bases. A dedicated NBA-run league could change how the sport is organized, financed, and broadcast across the region.

Details about the format, participating teams, and a timeline remain unclear. The NBA has not announced which existing clubs might join or whether new franchises would be created. Talks with various stakeholders are expected to continue in the coming months.

The failed merger vote does not end the NBA's ambitions. Instead, it clears the way for a separate venture. Whether that venture can coexist with the EuroLeague or will compete directly with it is an open question. For now, the NBA appears committed to building something new in Europe on its own terms.
