New York Mets superstar Juan Soto missed his second consecutive game on Wednesday, remaining out of the starting lineup as he continues to battle a lingering illness. The outfielder was initially scratched from Tuesday's game against the Miami Marlins after reporting symptoms before first pitch. Team officials have not specified the exact nature of the illness but have described it as a non-COVID related virus that has left Soto fatigued and unable to play.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that Soto is day-to-day and that the team is taking a cautious approach. "He came in feeling a little better this morning, but not good enough to go," Mendoza said. "We want to make sure he's fully recovered before we put him back out there. It's a long season, and we need him healthy."
Soto, who signed a record-breaking contract with the Mets in the offseason, has been a key contributor early in the season, posting strong numbers at the plate. His absence was felt in Tuesday's 4-2 loss, where the Mets managed only five hits. The team hopes he can return for the series finale on Thursday, but no official timetable has been set. In the meantime, the Mets have called up outfielder DJ Stewart from Triple-A Syracuse to provide depth.
