The Seattle Mariners have spent the last few years building a starting rotation that rivals most in MLB. Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, and Bryce Miller form a formidable top four, giving the team a clear strength. However, that strength has not translated into consistent offensive production, leaving the Mariners stuck in the middle of the playoff race. With the trade deadline approaching, the front office is now expected to listen to offers for one of their starting pitchers.
The logic is straightforward. The Mariners need bats, and moving a pitcher is the quickest way to acquire a proven hitter. Other teams are desperate for starting pitching, which gives Seattle significant leverage. While trading a young, controllable arm like Kirby or Miller would be painful, it might be necessary to fix a lineup that ranks near the bottom of the league in runs scored.
The team is not looking to tear down the rotation. Instead, they are likely to shop a pitcher in exchange for a controllable position player who can help immediately and in future seasons. Castillo, with his veteran presence and contract, could be the most logical candidate to move. He would bring back the biggest return. The Mariners have shown they can develop pitching, and they have depth in the minors. The question is whether the front office has the stomach to make a deal that weakens their biggest strength in order to fix their biggest weakness. The next few weeks will provide the answer.
