The developer behind a massive proposed sports and entertainment complex in Romulus, Michigan, has been indicted on federal fraud charges. The project, once touted as a $3 billion development, was intended to transform the area with stadiums, hotels, and retail space. However, authorities now allege the man at the center of the plan used the project to defraud investors.
According to court documents, the developer is accused of running a scheme that raised millions of dollars from investors by promising high returns tied to the Romulus project. Prosecutors claim he misrepresented the status of the development, including falsely stating that construction was underway and that key financial backing was secured. Instead of using the funds for the complex, investigators say he diverted the money for personal expenses, including luxury cars, travel, and real estate.
The charges include wire fraud and money laundering, with potential penalties of decades in prison if convicted. The developer was arrested earlier this week and is expected to appear in federal court for an initial hearing. The Romulus city government, which had supported the project as a major economic driver, has not commented on the indictment. The case highlights ongoing concerns about oversight in large-scale private developments, particularly those that rely heavily on investor capital before breaking ground.
