Austin Ekeler Signs with NFC Team in NFL Comeback

Austin Ekeler Signs with NFC Team in NFL Comeback

Veteran running back Austin Ekeler is returning to the NFL after agreeing to a deal with the Washington Commanders, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. The move brings the former Los Angeles Chargers standout to an NFC contender looking to strengthen its backfield for the upcoming season.

Ekeler spent the first seven years of his career with the Chargers, where he developed into one of the league's most versatile offensive weapons. He topped 1,500 scrimmage yards in multiple seasons and became a reliable pass catcher out of the backfield, routinely finishing among the top running backs in receptions and receiving touchdowns.

His production dipped during his lone season with the Chargers before he moved on, and questions about his age and durability followed him into free agency. Washington apparently sees enough left in the tank to add him to a roster that has been rebuilding its offensive identity.

The Commanders have been active in reshaping their skill positions, and Ekeler gives the team a proven option on third downs and in passing situations. His experience could also help mentor younger players in the locker room.

Terms of the agreement were not immediately disclosed. Ekeler is expected to compete for snaps once he passes a physical and joins the team for offseason workouts.
