Austin American-Statesman: Yes to women in sports. No to rigid quotas in Title IX enforcement

The recent debate over Title IX enforcement has drifted far from its original purpose. While the law was meant to guarantee equal opportunity for women in sports, the current approach has turned into a rigid numbers game. The government should abandon its quota-driven enforcement policies and return decision-making about athletics back to schools and students. That is the only way to keep the spirit of Title IX alive without turning every team roster into a bureaucratic formula.

For decades, Title IX has opened doors for female athletes, and that progress should never be rolled back. But the way some federal officials now interpret the law is not about opportunity anymore. It is about forcing schools to hit exact percentage targets, often by cutting men's teams or punishing programs that do not fit a strict statistical mold. This does not help women. It just creates resentment and instability.

Schools know their own students best. They understand which sports are popular, which facilities need work, and how to grow participation over time. When Washington steps in with a checklist, local leaders lose the flexibility to build fair and sustainable programs. The result is often a scramble to satisfy a formula rather than a genuine effort to expand access.

The answer is not to weaken Title IX. It is to enforce it with common sense. Let schools show they are making real progress, not just meeting a quota. Let them explain their unique circumstances. And let students, not federal auditors, have a say in how their athletic departments are run. That approach would honor the law's intent while respecting the people it was designed to serve.
