August’s Monthly Juventus Thoughts: Comeback Kids

The new season kicked off with a familiar feeling around Turin, and not just because of the crisp autumn air. Another transfer window has slammed shut, leaving us to sift through the rubble and ask the question we ask every year: are we actually better off than we were twelve months ago? The answer, as always with this club, is a complicated yes.

Let's start with the obvious. This squad has a nasty habit of making things difficult for itself. We saw it in the opening matches, where the team conceded first and had to claw their way back. It is thrilling, sure, but my cardiologist would prefer a boring 2-0 lead. The "comeback kids" mentality is admirable, but it is also a symptom of a deeper issue: a lack of focus in the opening twenty minutes. We cannot keep relying on the bench to save us every single time.

On the transfer front, the club did some business, but it feels more like patching holes than building a new ship. We moved on some dead weight, which is always a plus, but the midfield still looks a bit thin. We are one injury away from playing a defender in the middle of the park again, and I do not think I can handle that stress. The new signings look promising, but they need time to gel. The real test will be in the Champions League nights, not these early league games.

So, are we in a better spot? On paper, yes. The squad depth is slightly better, and the attitude seems more resilient. But the same flaws are there. We are still slow to start, and we still rely on individual brilliance to bail us out of collective mistakes. It is a long season, and while the fight is good to see, we need to start winning ugly from the first whistle. Otherwise, those comeback victories will turn into frustrating draws against teams we should be beating comfortably. For now, I am cautiously optimistic, but the leash is short.
